I have been doing Yoga since the age of 11 and since my first encounter with Yoga I had a strong sense of what Yoga has to offer, not only on a physical level but on mental, psychological and spiritual levels too.

Yoga gives me a feeling of harmony and balance, and helps me to feel connected to others and at one with the universe - its is a necessary and essential pratice for our busy modern lives.

I started my yoga life in the 70's (way before it was cool) at the Sivananda School of Yoga, which was then situated in Bree Street, Johannesburg.  I started teaching by chance, when my teacher went on holiday.  This opportunity deepened my personal practice and thus began a love affair with teaching yoga.

Teaching at the Ishta Yoga Studio is another blessing.  My teaching style is eclectic, mixing and matching various styles of yoga, although I do favour vinyasa or flow yoga.   My hatha  classes may be inspired by something I have read , eg "Now is the time to know that all we do is sacred …

Or we may work with a theme such as the earth; moon; chakras, etc.

I also love teaching Ashtanga Yoga as it gives me the opportunity to be "hands on" and assist with adjustments.  Don't be afraid of ashtanga, while it is a physically demanding practice, it can be modified and offers the full range of asanas in one class.  As students become familiar with the series (which is repeated in the same format each class) breath and movement become one and the state of yoga (union) is reached.

Yoga Teacher Nicola Phillips

Nicola Phillips

I could say I started practicing Yoga in 2001, but truly Yoga found me at that time and became a part of my life ever since.

I am accredited by the Yoga Africa Federation as an Internationally Registered Yoga Teacher, and began teaching at the ISHTA Studio in 2007.

Yoga’s integrated healing system brings together the body, mind and spirit promoting vitality and harmony.

I believe that through Yoga, we embark on an inner journey of self awareness, discovery and connectedness that leads to self transformation. And from that inner journey we are able to express ourselves in a more balanced, authentic and loving way in the outer world.

Haroun Kola

Hari Aum, I'm not a full time teacher at the Ishta Yoga School, I am deeply involved with what happens here though.

I maintain this web site, www.yoga-sa.com so you may have received an email I sent or responded to an ad I've placed.

I also maintain the Yoga Teacher's Fellowship web site http://completeyoga.co.za

I love doing yoga here, my favourite classes are Pritam's  Kundalini Yoga and Nicola's class on Monday evening. Sometimes I'm fortunate enough to catch  Bernice or Wendy's Sunday morning class too.
