Vinyasa Yoga
Ashtanga
is a traditional form of yoga, with a lineage that some practitioners
claim goes back thousands of years. Sometimes also called "Power Yoga",
Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga, is the name given to the system of hatha yoga
currently taught by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, a renowned Sanskrit scholar
and yogi in Mysore, South India.
Ashtanga
Yoga involves synchronising the breath with progressive
series of flowing postures. It is this flowing, uninterrupted sequence
that distinguishes Ashtanga
Yoga from other styles of Hatha Yoga. The
dynamic vinyasa
sequence which offers a flowing link between poses is
what characterises Ashtanga
Yoga and is one of the factors that
distinguishes "Power
Yoga" from other styles of Yoga.

Ashtanga Yoga,
practised
in its
correct sequential order,
gradually leads the practitioner to
rediscovering his or her fullest potential on all levels of human
consciousness--physical, psychological, and spiritual. Through this
practice of correct breathing (Ujjayi Pranayama), postures (asanas),
and gazing point (driste), we gain control of the senses and a deep
awareness of our selves. By maintaining this discipline with regularity
and devotion, one acquires steadiness of body and mind.
It is not only intended as a fitness system - its fiery series of vinyasa
(flowing postures linked by the breath) are intended not only
to detoxify, stretch, and strengthen the body, but to stoke the fires
of prana (life-force energy) and channel the amplified energy up the
spine, creating a state of meditative bliss.
